Darter Suspend/Hibernate Resume Networking Not Always Working

Bug Description

Hi,
When I suspend or hibernate, I would say that 95% of the time I can't get networking to come back on. The kernel simply does not recognize the interfaces. I try restarting /etc/init.d/networking with no luck. I flip the wireless switch and no luck. I would say that 1% of the time on resume from suspend or hibernate networking just works. I would say that 2% of the time if I flip the switch or do /etc/init.d/networking restart it brings things back up. The remaning 3% of the time I can see the networks on resume, but I always fail when trying to connect to them. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Does anyone know a solution?

Thanks,

I've also noticed that about 1 out of 30 times when I boot up the wireless networking is not working, and fn+f2 and flipping the wifi switch make no difference. Very annoying.

Is this a known issue? Am I the only one having the problem? Can I get confirmation of the problem, or is it just me?

There was a similar problem on the forums (although I can't attest to the percentages you mentioned).
Give this a try and see if it helps:

the solution that you mentioned did not work. I tested it for wireless, and had no success upon resume from hibernation. Any ideas? I would really like to be able to use the suspend and hibernate features, but right now without networking its a deal breaker.

This seems to work on my Darter.
Can we get some folks to give it a whack?

sudo gedit /etc/default/acpi-support
In the resulting text file, find the lines that say:

# Add services to this list to stop them before suspend and restart them in
# the resume process.
STOP_SERVICES="mysql"

...and make them say:
# Add services to this list to stop them before suspend and restart them in
# the resume process.
STOP_SERVICES="mysql network-manager"

Save and test.

Hi, Ben.

A lack of networking after suspend is not a hardware problem.
It is strictly a configuration issue.

Now that I made that change in my acpi-support file, mine seems to be doing pretty well.
Are you using Ubuntu or Kubuntu?

Best,
Tom

Hey, Ben.

It just came to my attention that the fix we applied to Darters for suspend/hibernate support was about a month ago. Could you check and make sure you have the current version of the driver installed:

System > Administration > System 76 Driver
Click the "About" Button and see if it says: Version 2.0.5

Then run it, just to be sure:
Click the "Install Tab" and then "Install Drivers" tab and then click "Install".
Then re-test.

If you do not have the 2.0.5 driver, let me know. That could be the problem.

Best,
Tom

Hi, Ben.

That explains it.
Please follow these instructions:

Installing and Running the System 76 Driver

From a terminal, enter the following commands one at a time:

wget http://planet76.com/repositories/system76-driver-2.0.4.deb
sudo dpkg -i system76-driver-2.0.4.deb

Make sure you're connected to the Internet.

Go to System > Administration > System 76 Driver
Select the 'Install Drivers' tab, and then select 'Install'.

When the driver finishes, reboot the computer.

Best,
Tom

Hi, Ben.

The Darter had a problem with freezing.
The first work-around was putting a CD in the drive. This stopped the freezing, but it
obviously wasn't a good permanent solution because as soon as the CD was removed from the drive,
the freezing restarted.
We discovered a permanent cure and sent it down in the System 76 driver.
Later, we discovered that the cure had a nasty side-effect. The drive would only freeze if someone
left a disk IN the drive when they were not actually using it.
We've also found the cure for this, which we are presently developing via a firmware update.

Let's take this one up via email, as it is way off the topic of this particular bug report.

Best,
Tom
