When attempting to add a new printer (HP Photosmart 2575) via system-
Adding the printer via the CUPS interface works perfectly, without any prompt for non-existent credentials.

This is an upstream problem. system- config- printer should check whether credentials are needed before asking for them. For example it could try to access the printer without credentials and only ask if it fails.
