Telepathy/Pidgin plugin

Enabling the start of converations with online contacts, with the option of starting for offline contacts, as well (disabled by default).

Would also be cool to be able to send files or look at chat history, too.

Setting status would also be nice. I bet this one is really for sure, given the tight connection between the Telepathy and Zeitgeist projects ;)

Definitely the ability to initiate chats with offline contacts would be great; Do lacks this feature, if I recall correctly, and that made the plugin less useful for me. As Colin suggests, making it an option with a default of off would be excellent.

Some desired features could include:
* Start conversations (online contacts, +offline when enabled)
* Send files to contacts.
* View chat history for contacts.
* Change status (Available, away, busy, etc) with ability to set a custom message, as well.
* Send IMs directly through Synapse (like Do does; this is very useful).
* Enable/disable IM accounts.
* When starting a chat (example: type Pidgin, tab), it could sort contacts by most-talked-with.

By telepathy, do you mean empathy? The default IM client in ubuntu now.

Yes. IIRC, Telepathy is the set of libraries behind Empathy, just as libpurple is the backend of Pidgin.

I patched debian synapse 0.2.10-2 to enable pidgin and it does seem to work with most simple cases (open chat, send message).
Can someone try it? (I'm running xfce-4.10)...
