Bug Description

MATE is a fork of Gnome 2 that uses a different name to avoid conflicts with newer versions of the same applications. By default, current versions of Synapse do not recognize .desktop files from it. Fixing this is as easy as adding an environment type called MATE. Adding the line `case "MATE": result |= EnvironmentType.GNOME; break;` to desktop-file-service.vala and recompiling makes it work.

This bug is about the fact that Synapse does not recognize MATE applications (i.e. the appearance properties). Your problem is that you don't have compositing enabled.
