Chinese/Japanese keyboard layouts are listed but do not work. There is also no option for changing to iBus. Generally, in ubuntu, after installing the Chinese system language, the layouts appear in the Layout tab (Chinese (simplified), Chinese(traditional).

I also have this bug on the latest Freya beta 1, all updates installed.
After installing ibus-anthy and ibus-mozc neither shows in the keyboard input chooser. Also launching ibus and setting the required input method doesn't solve the problem, because it seems like ibus does not actually handle the input system.

Switching with ctrl+space shows the ibus layout dialog, but nothing really happens, the layout stays on system language default.

It perfectly works on Luna 0.2 ほんとうです, at least japanese input works fine... of course after

1. Install "Japanese" from "Language Support"
2. Open terminal and run "ibus-setup" command
3. Select "Yes" when pop up message saying "Keyboard Input Methods (IBus Daemon) has not been started. Do you want to start it now? " appears
4. On the Input Method tab of the Ibus Preferences screen, select the Customize active input methods check box
5. Press Select an input method and select Japanese → Anthy
6. Press Add and then press Close

that's all!

Does not work for me as well. I had to switch to uim and uim-mozc , to get it to work I had to remove all ibus stuff and then had to mess with the settings so not exactly sure how I got it to work, was a bit of a pain.

Make sure to check your settings in Language support after you remove ibus everything, install the uim stuff, then make sure you logout and log back in. After that you have settings to set in:

Language support for the input method to uim
The uim-pref-gtk search for input method, you will see two options, for me it was the 2nd option, try them bot if need be, if the wizard comes up for the input settings, click cancel and try the other menu item.

From there click "Specify default IM"
Default input method set to Mozc
got to Toolbar (although I don't see a toolbar) chance check Enable menu-based input method switcher
Set effective coverage to whole desktop.

Logout / login after this you should be able to press shift+space and have Japanese 日本語できる

I installed the elementary OS 0.4 Beta 2. This problem is continuing unfortunately.

I am a substitute in fcitx as a solution of this problem.
It will give you some hints on the installation from the Ubuntu.
(You should note that many of the Ubuntu flavors have adopted the Fcitx on behalf of the IBus)

When use the Fcitx, there is a problem with the icon is not displayed.
As a solution means, Enter the "fcitx-config-gtk3" than terminal,
Set to display the information panel. (appearance tab)

Still a problem in Loki. Using asian language inputs on Elementary is still too hard. This should be fixed so that more international users come. Also, even in Ubuntu it is kind of a pain to setup, as it is not obvious to setup and you have to do some Googling to setup. If there was an obvious way to set it up, you would win in this front hands down.
