Sometimes when I wake up my laptop and log in, the secondary monitor (ASUS VW266H, plugged in via HDMI) does not wake up, even though it still appears in the System Settings -> Display interface. No amount of fiddling with the Display interface (making any kind of change and hitting 'Apply') will wake up the monitor. Application windows that were displaying on the secondary monitor are still there, and windows on the primary monitor can be moved to the secondary monitor, though obviously in both cases these app windows are not visible.
A reboot does not fix the problem. The only thing that fixes the problem is unplugging the monitor's power cord and plugging it back in.
I just installed Loki a few days ago; previously I was running Ubuntu 16.04, where I had a similar but less problematic issue: the secondary monitor would not always wake up automatically after logging back into my laptop, but at such times, opening the System Settings interface was enough to trigger the wake up. |
Precondition: secondary HDMI monitor plugged in to laptop
Effect: Once the secondary display is turned off due to inactivity (specifically, once it goes into standby mode), Loki does not turn it back on once there is activity again.
No action within either System Settings -> Display nor System Settings -> Power will turn it back on, nor will a reboot. The only remedy is to physically unplug the secondary monitor and plug it back in.
Steps to produce effect are consistent. In System Settings -> Power:
1. Set 'Turn off display when inactive for:' to 5 minutes (the actual setting doesn't seem to matter so long as it is not 'Never').
2. Wait for the displays (i.e., primary and secondary) to 'turn off'.
3. Wait a moment longer (a few seconds at most) for the secondary monitor to go into 'Standby' mode for lack of input.
4. Move mouse / press key to generate activity again. Primary monitor (on the laptop) turns on; secondary does not - it stays in standby mode.
5. Enter System Settings - Display. This plug still indicates the secondary monitor is present. Windows that were on the secondary monitor are still there (but obviously can't be seen), and windows can be moved to the secondary monitor as well (but obviously can't be seen). No actions within the Display plug will bring the secondary monitor out of standby mode (it doesn't appear to know the monitor is in standby mode).
Supporting details:
- This happens for sure when the laptop is plugged in. I have not tested this on battery but can do so.
- Monitor is ASUS VW266H
- Laptop is System 76 Galago Ultra Pro
- This has been happening since I installed Loki at the beginning of October 2016. Previously, I was running Ubuntu 16.04. In Ubuntu 16.04, when the secondary monitor did not automatically come back after moving the mouse / pressing a key, simply opening the System Settings usually activated it again. When it did not, I could proceed to the Displays interface where it registered that the second monitor was not turned on. Within the Displays interface I could manually turn it on again, and the display would come out of standby without me needing to do anything physically to the display. A successful bug fix for Loki would do at least as well as Ubuntu 16.04.
Workaround: in System Settings -> Power, keep 'Turn off display when inactive for:' set to 'Never'. |
