I made a few small improvements to the autotools scripts, which I put in a bzr branch that can be found at http://
Most of the changes are small; the only major one is to distribute the pkg-config and libtool m4 macros so that they can be used to check for the libraries' existence.
Another change of note is that I ran autoupdate and it, in addition to other changes, bumped the AC_PREREQ to my version. I don't know if it matters, but I suspect it can be pushed back down.
I don't recommend blindly applying the patches, this was a learning experience for me and it's entirely possible I did things wrong.
