Bug Description

We installed Stellarium is on systems with Windows (XP, Vista and Seven) and based on a Macbook, in the latter case of course the version for Mac OS X. Everything Ok.
So, we decided to edit the file "ssystem.ini", as suggested in the forums of the amateur astronomers, to append to the original the lines to render the search for small bodies in the comets C/2009 P1 Garradd and Elenin C/2010 X1:

[Elenin]
name = Elenin C/2010 X1
parent = Sun
radius = 24
oblateness = 0.0
halo = true
color = 1.0,1.0,1.0
tex_halo = star16x16.png
tex_map = nomap.png
coord_func = comet_orbit
orbit_TimeAtPericenter = 2455815.22816
orbit_PericenterDistance = 0.482473
orbit_Eccentricity = 1.000016
orbit_ArgOfPericenter = 343.8071
orbit_AscendingNode = 323.2259c
orbit_Inclination = 1.8392
lighting = false
albedo = 1
sidereal_period = 365.25

[Garradd]
name = Garradd C/2009 P1
parent = Sun
radius = 10
oblateness = 0.0
halo = true
color = 1.0,1.0,1.0
tex_halo = star16x16.png
tex_map = nomap.png
coord_func = comet_orbit
orbit_TimeAtPericenter = 2455919.1863
orbit_PericenterDistance = 1.550778
orbit_Eccentricity = 1.000901
orbit_ArgOfPericenter = 90.7398
orbit_AscendingNode = 325.9957
orbit_Inclination = 106.1893
lighting = false
albedo = 1
orbit_visualization_period = 365.25

On Windows XP and Seven Garradd the comet is fully displayed.

Instead of Vista (both 32 and 64bit) and Mac OS x.xx absolutely not.

How do we fix this bug?

Please don't attach anything yet.

Make sure that you are editing the correct ssystem.ini file. The Solar System Editor plug-in creates a duplicate of the solar system file in your user data directory. It overrides the one in the installation directory. Make sure that you are making changes in the correct file.

On Vista, the path to the directory is something like:
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Stellarium

Also make sure that there are no spaces left at the end of the lines (sometimes this happens when text is copied from an internet forum).

Also make sure that the invisible end-of-line characters in the pasted text are the same as in the rest of the file. (It's better to use some kind of programmers' text editor like Notepad++ to edit configuration files.)

Please also have a look in Stellarium's log files on the systems that don't show the comets. On Windows, there's a shortcut to the log file in Stellarium's folder in the Start menu - look for "Last run log". The file itself is a plain text file called "log.txt" in Stellarium's user data directory. Inside the file, look for "Loading Solar System data" and the lines that follow it.

No, nothing unusual, either in the log files.

This has expired in 2012.

On MacOS, the ssystem.ini to be edited should be in the Library/Preferences/Stellarium/data/ (or ~/Library/Application Support/Stellarium/data on newest versions of Mac OS X) sub-directory of the user's home directory.

I ask the OP if this solves the issue. If there is no answer within 60 days, this report will expire automatically, and should stay "Expired" or set to "Won't Fix". There is no use of keeping or resurrecting outdated or dead reports as "opinions".
