Perhaps some current screenshots help to nail down the problem. Enclosed is a shot of my Thinkpad T60 screen under Win XP 32-SP3 with Stellarium 0.11.2.

And here the "no open GL2" version - no significant improvement.

To me this looks like a font anti-aliasing problem.

Now this is a long shot, so I think it probably won't make a difference, but it might be worth a try... If I recall correctly, there ate font rendering options in the catalyst control center (or whatever it's called these days since AMD have been renaming ATI things since they bought them some years ago) . That's the video driver configuration tool. Only applies if you have an ATI/AMD card mind you.

Have a fiddle in there and see if changing settings there makes a difference. Specifically anything referring to truetype or font rendering or anti-aliasing.

That's for your help!

I think I tried every option available in my Catalyst Control Center (CCC):
No improvement at all. The bug seems to be quite specific for
Stellarium since no other application shows a similar problem.

I am quite clueless where to dig next...

BTW I use driver version 8.593.100-100210a-095952E-ATI, Direct3D- and
OpenGL-Driver 6.14.10.0647/6.14.10.8545.

This is likely an ATi driver bug (Radeon X1000, maybe also X000? Later Radeons have a different architecture) , probably with blending.

If this is the case, blending could be disabled for text drawing on these GPUs on Windows.
(That can be done in StelQGLRenderer::drawText() ). The result would be black rectangles
with text, though, which might be even worse when there are many labels.

Unfortunately, I don't have any Windows PC, nor an X1000 Radeon.

I fear that later versions have the same problem. I started on a Radeon X1400
but the bug is also present on a ATI Mobility FireGL v5250 (X1700).

It still can be a driver's bug - but as far I can seen no other application is
affected by it.

Just tested the beta on two machines - one with a Radeon X1300 and one
with a FireGL V5200. On both machines the bug is present in version 0.11.0 --
and GONE in version 0.12.

Great - good work. The bug seems finally fixed!!
