Stellarium 10.5 crashes on my macbook running os 10.6.4 when ever I click on the nightmode icon.

Do you have the Oculars plug-in enabled?

If yes, then this is a duplicate of bug #596453 (see the comments there). You can prevent the crash by disabling the Oculars plug-in or by replacing the sqlite driver file with the one packaged with Stellarium 0.10.4 (see comment #7 in the other bug).
