Confirmed effect and Ohan Smit's workaround:

Bug: Extreme flickering (black/true image, occassional white flicker) from the very startup on. Missing hover feedback in menu. Have to "click-guess" menu buttons.

Fixed by switching to windowed mode and maximizing in windowed mode. No artifacts in maximized windowed mode.

System:
* Windows 7 Professional (32 bit, V6.1, Build 7600; English Locale), all Aero features on
* ATI Radeon HD 4770 w/latest drivers (as of today, just updated)
* Intel Core2Quad Q6600
* 4 GB RAM
* DirectX 11

Changed in stellarium:
status: New → Confirmed
summary: - Monitor flickers from begin of loading and doesn't end.
+ Screen flickers from begin of loading and doesn't end.

Here's another fix.

Go into compatibility mode and select Disable Desktop Composition. This ups the framerate from 0.3 to 61+.

I think this bug has something to do with the ATI Catalyst drivers.
I have used Stellarium 10.02 since last fall without problems with Windows 7 64-bit edition and probably the September 2009 release of Ati Catalyst drivers.
When I updated my ATI drivers to the newest version 10.1 released 27th of January 2010
I got this same flicker problem, Disable Desktop Composition in compatibility mode
fixes the problem for me too. But I think this suggest that there is a bug i the ATI drivers?

System:
Windows 7 Professional
Amd Phenom X3 720
4gb memory
Ati Radeon 4850 512mb

There was some change betweeb 0.10.3 and 0.10.4 which fixed a similar problem on MacOSX. Can someone try again with the last release?

In my case the screen flickering started when I installed the latest drivers for my ATI Radeon 4800 series cards. Program works fine if run in a window.

I have the same problem with the screen flickering but disableing "desktop composition" doesn't resolves all the problems. Other problems are: I don't see the stars, the program doesn't remembers the view settings (such as constellations lines and names, don't show atmosphere) after I close and reopen the program. I'd tried to install several times Windows 7, the program works fine with Ati drivers supplied by Windows but when I install the new Ati drivers the problems appears. My setup is: MB Asus P5WDH Deluxe, CPU Core2Duo E6400, 3GB ram GEIL Ultra, videocard Asus Ati Radeon 3870.

This seems to be an ATI driver bug on windows 7, so I mark this bug as Invalid.
