This is on a Toshiba Satellite Pro A60 running Xubuntu 9.10. I believe the graphics card is an ATI Radeon 7000. (Before I changed to Xubuntu, Stellarium worked fine on Windows XP.)

Hi Markus, could you make it crash and submit the apport crash report [1] to this bug? We'd like to see the stack trace for your segfault.

Just saw you are using 0.10.4, apport won't work. Could you use gdb [1]? Thanks.

I had the same problem on ATI Radeon 9200 PRO. Disable Option EnablePageFlip in Device Section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf fix it. It should looks like this

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Device0"
        Driver "radeon"
        Option "EnablePageFlip" "off"
EndSection

Or just comment out or remove the line, becose disable is the default value for radeon driver.

Thank you for the work-around! Is there a more user-friendly (i.e. graphical) way of doing this?

Also, the bug status has been changed to "In Progress". Who is working on it?

Hi Andy,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on
Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 481669

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so
we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference
bug 481669 in your report if you think it may be related):

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you
feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released'

Let me know what info I can provide to help.

I've also experienced this bug using an ATI Radeon X300 and version 0.10.5 on Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick).

I upgraded my video card to a ATI Radeon HD4350 and got a segmentation fault with the fglrx driver. Using the standard driver, stellarium starts but there is no text anywhere in the program, including the splash screen!

I have no problems with Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) using either video card by the way.

I tried to look in the source of the Linux kernel at this message
which appears in the dmesg output. The code where it happens is in
the DRI driver and I simply don't know what it is doing. Some sort of
allocation of buffers and is clearly not able to allocate as much as
is wanted. I don't know what exactly.

It might be for a texture. Our biggest texture is m42dumont.png in the
default nebula set. This is a long shot but maybe someone could try
it and tell me if this helps:

Please execute these commands in the terminal:

$ mkdir -p ~/.stellarium/nebulae/default
$ cd ~/.stellarium/nebulae/default
$ wget http://porpoisehead.net/images/m42dumont.png
$ stellarium

If that doesn't work, try running with the --safe-mode option just in case.

What this will do is download a smaller version of this texture from
my web site and use it instead of the installed version.

Obviously, this is display specific, and as shown in the attached log, all X11 setting are by default and configuration is computed on each X11 start-up.
I did not find any X11 configuration tool to test different settings.

Thanks Medor, this solved my problems as well!

- First added the x-updates repo, downloaded some packages via the Update Manager (about 1MB). Didn't solve the problem.
- Next, added the xorg-edgers repo, downloaded more packages (about 16 MB), problem solved.

I think it is possibe to only use the xorg-edgers repo, but please correct me if I'm mistaken. These are the newest X.org packages, the other repo contains slightly older but more stable packages.

Finally Stellarium works again! Of course, skies are clouded at the moment ;).

xorg-edgers won't help, since the required fix is a kernel patch, not X.

Rather, you need to apply this patch to your kernel.
Or maybe try using one of the mainline kernel builds at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/.

So let me see if I understand this correctly: with a confirmed defect, all you need to do is wait for the supported product to no longer be supported, then decide to not fix it? And put the onus back on the user to do the regression testing?
