Bug Description

After Selecting the Satellite button a few times the program crashes. This is on a Windows 7 Pro system (32bit) with ATI x1650 512m video card with latest drivers installed. Additionally the Angle version is the only version that comes close to working on this system due to the older video card.

We have pointed out several times, also to you, that old GPUs will likely cause problems with V0.13 and later. X1650 is from 2006 and only supports OpenGL2.0 while Qt5 required OpenGL2.1 capable hardware. The logfile should indicate what kind of problems your card has. Likely we cannot do much here except suggesting a 30€ hardware upgrade.

Alexander - I will have to check into this "realistic" mode setting as I do not know what setting it is set to. I just installed the Angle version for 32bit windows and it is set to whatever the install default is for that. I did not know there is a setting available that may effect this. I will check....

Today I looked at the number of downloads for the various versions of Stellarium under the "Download project files" and it appears that "most" of us are interested in the Angle/32bit version with close to 4x as many downloads as the other test versions. This would indicate most people are using older hardware as the other versions do not work with older video cards as you stated. Before I will spend 30.00 on a new video card I will likely just pay 30.00 for SkySafari. By developing the new version of Stellarium that only works with new hardware, fewer people will be using Stellarium, how does that make sense?

I would also add that the Angle 32bit 13.1.95 works well in all other aspects on this old/2006 system, the only buggg I see is with the Satellite button, that is why I report it as a bugggg. The other test versions do not work at all on this system with numerous problems in each version so I have given up trying to make any of those work correctly.

Alexander - Not sure what you mean by that but what I am saying is that 4 times as many people downloaded the 13.1.95 32bit Angle version as the 13.1.96 version. That tells me I am not the only one having troubles with 13.X.XX and the Angle 32bit version of 13.1.95 is more in demand then any of the 13.1.96 versions because there is not a 13.1.96 Angle 32bit available if that makes any sense......... I know there has been considerable discussion about my 8 year old video card not being up to speed but the thing is far from obsolete and runs 99% of the software I throw at it quite well.

Respectfully
Robert

Robert, why you are compare the number of downloads for 0.13.1.96, which was published 2 days ago, and 0.13.1.95, which was published more week ago? If you want correct comparison, then you should use number 858 for win32 and 840 for ANGLE-win32.

Robert Van Vugt (rvvcuda) wrote :

Alexander - I used 13.1.95 Angle 32bit in the comparison because until just minutes ago there was no 13.1.96 Angle 32bit. There is now a 13.1.96 Angle 32bit posted for download and testing. The Angle versions are the only ones that will work on my older system. To be fair it would actually be interesting to compare the number of downloads that 13.1.96 Angle 32bit gets and compare that to the older release 13.1.95 Angle 32bit but this older one's total downloads no longer is showing. You are correct in comparing apples to apples but like I said there was no 13.1.96 Angle 32bit until moments ago to compare it with. I will think the 13.1.96 Angle 32bit will have many more downloads than any of the other versions of 13.1.96. I will give 13.1.96 Angle 32bit a try and check the Satellite button...............

Thanks
Robert

V13.1.96 Angle 32bit continues to crash when selecting the Satellite button. The Satellite emblems display along with its name but they sometimes will flicker on/off. Additionally the Satellite Orbit/Track does not display at all and after max of two cycles of on/off the program crashes. Would be nice to fix that so us with older systems can still run Stellarium. All the other aspects of the program seem to run fine (Ones I have played with).

Thanks

Stellarium opens and works fine until I click on the Satellite Button. Once I do that I do see some Satellite icons on the screen but they flicker along with the name of them, and position jumps erratically. There is no Satellite trail/path that used to be there in older versions and at this point the Stellarium program crashes. I get the white screen with a Windows System box asking me to close the program.

Today I downloaded and installed the test version of 13.2 Angle 32 bit from the project files site. It fails to start and log file indicates it can not find the config.ini so after several try's to remove and reinstall I decided to wipe all traces of Stellarium from my machine and re-install 13.1.96 Angle 32 bit. After I did all this it seems it fixed this issue with Satellites Button or Invalid Orbits crashing the program. It appears maybe there were some leftover satellite data from previous versions maybe responsible for the crash I was seeing?????? So it appears for now that 13.1.96 does actually not have a problem with this after a complete clean install. That being said though 13.2 Angle 32 bit seems it can not find its config.ini file. I have reported this via bug report along with log file.

One Bug fixed but a new one discovered. :-(
