Thanks. Hard to take a screenshot; moving the mouse restores the normal appearance.
Today, the screen only flickers a few times, then returns to normal.

I suspect an interaction with the OS X Dock, which I keep on the bottom where
it may overlap the Stellarium menu bar. Putting the Dock elsewhere alleviates
the problem.

You may call this priority low.
