Userpoints

I'm considering adding the "userpoints" module. http://drupal.org/project/userpoints

It would reward users with "points" (they can be rename/rebranded to something like Ubuntoints or something) for various helpful actions.

Submitting a material would reward a user with a lot of points (50-100)
Translating something would reward a user with a lot of points (50-100)

Voting on a material would give a few points (2-10)
Commenting on a material would give a few points (2-15)

Inviting someone would give a user a decent amount of points (5-15)
Inviting someone who registers would get more points (25-60)
Someone who accepts an invitation could get points for registering (10-25)

It adds some fun to the seriousness.
Also, spreadfirefox has something like this. As well as an "affiliates module" which I cannot seem to figure out exactly what it does. http://drupal.org/project/affiliates

What are your thoughts?

Seems awesome. I believe it should be possible to later even add points to the SpreadUbuntu project Karma for users. LaunchPad will one day allow this thorugh the LP API... That's why I'm so insistent in the OpenID stuff: I would like to see it all linked ;-)

As I said: GREAT IDEA!

Affiliates really is nothing more than an extension of SU towards user sites:

* Add a link to your site and get some *points* or *Click number* for you to show off your SpreadUbuntu awesomeness to you fellow marketeers!

It's all about metrics and gemmick: no more, no less!

Nothing I would use actively under normal circunstances, but to promote this site I'm willing to go VERY far ;-)

What are the thoughts on this? I don't know if I can still implement the affiliates module, so we may not be able to reward for linking.

However, the points could still be a reward for most existing types of contributions.

I hesitate to give rewards for participating in campaigns because it would be an incentive for lying about how many posters one puts up. It could be an incentive for submitting any participation at all, while not rewarding them for larger contributions.

Would this be a fun addition, would it just take up space, or worse: give users a reason to want to submit lots of poor materials.

I think this will be easier when the LoCo Directory shows up. It's the
Python backend handling LoCo members and structure we have been discussing
since day 1!

Campaigns should be our focus indeed, as a marketing site. The base you have
built there now will take us a long way forward! :-)

I rather have crappy material (I am, for instance, not a designer but I
upload what I do) than no material at all. Let people upload what they want
and the votes they get will put actual democracy in what is shown.

This would make perfect sense, specially if you think of meritocracy terms:

   - Some people will get their material in the front page (ref: my mock
   up) because it has been voted to the top and stay there.
   - While new material could also be shown, but it will be taken away as
   newer material arrives.

Everyone gets fame, but what people likes the most is what stays on top.

We could have a top downloaded, top voted, newest, biggest etc category. A
SpreadUbuntu hall-of-fame much like the 5-a-day project.

Just an idea. But that's for Karmic+1 or even Karmic+2. Although we should
sthrive to have that in place before the next LTS.

I guess I didn't consider how the voting system would act as a quality filter. Perhaps positive/negative votes could also impact the submitter's userpoints (i think there's a module for that). Users can also get points for voting.

I guess it's not really a bad idea to have this. I was worried it could be, but this should probably be put off for now.

The "get materials" page has tabs for "popular" "recent" and "top rated".

This seems like and excellent idea, especially for users that contribute, it reminds me of how Wakoopa works. I would also like to add it would be good if users could track what they have voted for and commented on in the account. It would be a useful way to kind of bookmark material they liked.

I guess this can be done by either:

* tracking user activity and having it shown in the user profile
* using a username tag added to the material users upload, comment or vote
;)
