this just recently happened after i was downloading a media file converter and it stopped in the middle of installing and froze up on me. Since then i have not been able to download any software. Im also new to linux. Thanks. Ryan

This error even reappears after a restart of the computer?

Have you enabled daily checks for updates? (update-manager -> preferences)
