Bug Description

Most noticeable to me with Firefox.

1. Browse normally, note how orange dot next to Firefox
2. Mozilla releases new Firefox beta release and snap is updated.
3. Keep browsing normally - except now orange dot next to Firefox is gone - and the implications:
You can no longer switch back to the browsing session you are on by clicking on the launcher.
It will just another window in the session.

You can also reproduce this just be doing a revert or refresh to another version.

Was not able to reproduce with Chromium. If this is a Firefox specific issue, is there a better place to report (additional issues on occasion where it recommends you to manually download the tar.gz as the snap didn't get updated for whatever reason)

This is a real problem, one potential workaround is simply not auto-updating in snapd when firefox is running.

Changed in snapd:
importance: Undecided → High
status: New → Confirmed
importance: High → Critical

I have seen that with several snaps I maintain a few times already (chromium and libreoffice).

That's only one visible symptom of the problem. Another one that's much more annoying is updating config files under $SNAP_USER_DATA and next time you start the app those changes are lost.

I will mark this as duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/snapd/+bug/1616650 which is well under way towards being fixed.
