Need richer autotools control

Bug Description

For this project I need the following build pipeline:
./configure
make world
make check
make install-world

(by default contrib modules are not built, and this snap needs to include them)

It would be great if the autotools plugin allowed me to override the make steps.

Note that as of Snapcraft v2.24 the prepare[1]/build[2]/install[3] scriptlets feature may prove useful to you.

Yes, I think the scriptlets feature is a better approach. Make all plugins more flexible, rather than the unscalable approach of doing them one at a time.
