show total percentage of upgrade status in shell mode

This is being taken into consideration.

I have a preliminar suggestion: after a package finishes download, Smart shows
the percentage of the complete download transaction. One easy way to show the
requested info is to put the X/outofY on percentage's side.

I would appreciate this as well. A percentage showing how much of the
total packages size has been installed might even be better. As not all
package have the same size and a big size rpm takes more time than a small one.
I believe that this can be reflected by using a percentage of the total
rpm size.

when doing smart --upgrade --stepped --yes i'd like to see the total amount of
packages that are to be installed, and how many are already done. again,
something like urpmi does: eg
"installing 3/502 kdebase: [#################### ]"
