After some investigation, I discovered that the problem is not the SearchBar not being focused.

The problem is that Slingshot itself is not focused when we open it from the GNOME top panel.

I can confirm that the textbox is focused but the window does not grab focus.

This works most of the time, but I have noticed that sometimes, the textbox does not have focus at startup.

This is still currently broken on Oneiric.

I'm testing on Oneiric and Slingshot (whichever version is in the repos right now) itself isn't grabbing focus; however, I'm launching it by keyboard shortcut; perhaps that's the problem?

It should be fixed, don't hesitate to tell it if there is any problem (and please write the window manager).

Still present in Compiz. It's not about the search box, it's about the window itself, so I've opened a new bug: #956335

The easiest fix I've found is going into CCSM>General Options>Focus and Raise Behavior>Focus Prevention Level and setting it to off. Maybe this is too brutish or rough a tactic, but it works for me!

I've also attached Slingshot to a hot corner, using compiz.

In my Compiz profile I've added Slingshot to the "exceptions" area of focus
prevention. This makes it only apply to Slingshot rather than turning focus
prevention off for all windows and is closer to the proper fix.

Cassidy James

It seems to work, but you see the *inactive* style quite shortly before it focuses, so its IMHO not good implemented.

It can't be implemented better, blame compiz.

This bug still affects me. The textbox is focused, but the window itself isn't.
It doesn't happen with xfwm4 or openbox, I can only reproduce it wit Gala.

How I reproduce it (Warning!: The effect may be permanent, so do this in a dummy user account!):
  - Use an app that has sometime of textinput widget currently focused (I could reproduce it with pantheon-terminal and dconf-editor).
  - Open Slingshot using [Super+Space]
This triggers the bug for me, and the effect is permanent, even across reboots.
However, other user accounts can continue using Slingshot just fine.

This also happens when using Mutter, and pressing the 'Applications' button in Wingpanel (I opened bug #1088468 since this is slightly different from this bug, the textbox gets focus, but no input).

The bug I experience is that the searchbox seems to have focus (blue border) but when I type, the input doesn't always go to slingshot. The mouse still works (scrolling) so it seems like slingshot grabs the mouse, but not always the keyboard.

This bug does not occur when there is no app on the current workspace that could "steal" the keyboard input, and it happens randomly when there is an app like Scratch or Midori, right now as I type this comment.

I'll mark as not fixed since it still affects multiple users.
