Jumpy behavior when typing space in search

When typing space in the search field, it executes a kind of confusing animation. It animates over to the side, like it's trying to go to the search results screen, but starts animating back immediately. I'm then left back in the default grid view. The search bar still has the space character, highlighted. If I deselect the space and type another, the same behavior happens and leaves 2 space characters, and so on.
I think this may be intended behavior (don't show results if only whitespace has been entered) but the way it executes is jarring and confusing. If it could determine the space before executing the animation, and not highlight the space (then ignore it in the search), it would be less jarring and also consistent with search fields in other programs/platforms. For example, look how it behaves in pantheon-files if you type a space into the search field.
