manually added .desktop files not included in slingshot-launcher

I'm trying to add .desktop files and regardless of whether I put them in ~/.local/share/applications/ or /usr/share/applications, make them executable, and include a category line, they do not appear in slingshot-launcher. I tried irc and was instructed to file this bug report.

Do they appear when you've restarted the OS?

They did not; however, while playing around this morning I found the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications are *not* executable. Running chmod 644 on the .desktop files I've added and restarting corrected this problem. Strange permissions though...
