Size setting without effect

When trying to set a size for the scanned area, always the whole possible area is scanned, regardless of the settings used. I use simple scan with an old mustek1200 UB Plus scanner, (gt68xx-chip) on ubuntu 10.10 32 bit, and the brandnew proposed version simple-scan-2.32.0-0ubuntu3.deb; but this behaviour was the same with 9.10 and 10.04. Cropping works, so the problem isn't severe, but the setting does not work...
