Bug Description

When trying to scan from within simple scan with the epson perfection 1250, it will only light the lamp and make a short sound.

This problem doesn't occur in XSane if the lamp warmup time is set to >= 5. If the lamp warmup time is < in XSane, it gives the same problem.

The solution is probably just a simple configuration parameter that instructs the sane backend to use a warmup time.

Attached is the debug output.

Log shows this driver has a warm-up setting:
** (simple-scan:5339): DEBUG: Option 24: name='warmup-time' title='Warmup-time' type=int size=4 min=-1, max=999, quant=1 cap=soft-select,soft-detect
** (simple-scan:5339): DEBUG: Description: Warmup-time in seconds.

Changed in simple-scan:
status: New → Triaged
importance: Undecided → Medium
summary: - Epson Perfection 1250 doesn't start scanning, while it does scan in
- XSane.

Wouldn't it be better if the warmup time was pre-set instead of user-configurable? We don't want the casual user worrying about a setting for which the value should be known in advance per scanner model.

For example: I didn't know what to do when XSane wouldn't let me scan until I had searched some forums where they told me that I had to change the value of the lamp warmup time. This type of problem shouldn't occur in a program as simple as simple-scan.

It sounds to me like it should be set in the driver, i.e. if a particular model of scanner requires 5s to warm up, then the minimum value should be 5. I'm leaving this bug open to gague how widespread this problem may be. I find it unlikely that I'll make a change to simple-scan to support this. You can probably work around this by setting the default in /etc/sane.d.

OK thanks for the information. I will look into it some more, and eventually report a bug against the driver if the problem is easily solved there.

Setting a different warmup time in the .conf effectively solves the problem. Just so people who get here using Google know: the warmup time can be set in /etc/sane.d/plustek.conf sing the line 'option warmup 1'. It seems a warmup time of 1 second is sufficient for this particular scanner model.

Thanks for the help Bram! I seem to be having the same issue with my HP 4100C. Changing that warmup time to 120 in plustek.conf seems to have fixed it.
