Bug Description

Binary package hint: simple-scan

First of all, thank you and congratulations for this new little app, simple and efficient, I really like it, except... that it is not possible to automaticaly save the scans.

Maybe there could be an option in the Preferences to replace the "Scan" and "Save" buttons by a "Scan&save" button ?

Best regards

Do you want to:

Press the scan button and be prompted for a location to save the file to?

or

Just have your scans automatically saved into a directory somewhere? (e.g. ~/Pictures/Scanned Images)

Heya Robert,
IMHO the latter would be preferable.

Setting this as Triaged.

Indeed, I thought about the 2nd option :
I wish there could be an option (in Preferences menu) to get (nearly) the same behavior as in Xsane, I mean :
- in the Preferences menu, choose a Folder where scans will automatically be saved (default would be e.g. ~/Pictures/Scanned Images), and default file type (.jpg or pdf...)
- if you select the "Automatically save my scans" option in the Preferences menu, then each time you press the "Scan" button in the main window, it scans and the scan is automaticcaly saved in the (previously choosen) folder.

Advantage of this behavior : the user saves time
Disadvantage : this new behavior would not allow to save multi-pages PDF scans (like in X-sane i think), as it saves page by page.

i have another idea : we can propose both behaviors at the same time in a transparent way !

A) by default Simple-scan would save the documents page by page in the default folder each time the "Scan" button is pressed. (default folder and default file type could be changed in the Preferences options)
B) Then, if the user press the "Save" button, he has the possibilities to select another file type, and/or save multiple pages PDF, and/or select another destination folder. If the documents are saved this way, then Simple-scan would automatically delete the corresponding A) files.

What do you think about this ?

I think it might be a little unexpected in removing the file from the default directory.

What I would like to do is make simple-scan more like Cheese in that it automatically saves your files and they can be browsed in the bottom of the application. The save option then becomes more of an optional operation.

That would be great !

The "Save" button should then disappear IMHO in order to avoid confusion (as scans would be already automatically saved).

As all scanned documents would be saved in one folder, i think that :
- either we should add a "Open scan folder" button in the main window, and keep the "New document" button (that would only clear the history in Simple-scan browser, not delete the files in the scan folder)
- or we should remove the "New document" button and leave all scan history in Simple-scan browser (like Cheese does).

After having scanned one or several documents, the user should be able to select one or several scans in Simple-scan (by-the-way, the scan selection is currently hardly visible, this should also be improved).

When one or several scans are selected, the user could drag-n-drop them to Nautilus or email client (indeed like we can currently do in Cheese), or by right-clic a context menu should appear with :
- Open [like in Cheese browser]
- Save as (same window as the current "Save" behavior, for multiple-scan PDF for example) [like in Cheese browser]
- Rotate left
- Rotate right
- Crop
- Delete [like in Cheese browser]

(by the way, I am using your PPA, but i did not find any mailing-list, is there one?)
