Bug Description

Use the gnomescan backend instead of the SANE.
This application is currently using SANE because:
- There had previously been problems with gnomescan so using SANE was more guaranteed to work
- Documentation on gnomescan was not easy to find

Hi,

I have no time to maintain GNOME Scan for now. You're welcome to contribute :). 0.7.1 have good "scan job" API. Don't hesitate to ask for help.

Regards,
Étienne

Simple Scan should remain DE-independent. Switching to gnomescan would bring several unnecessary dependencies. Besides, what's wrong with having SANE as the backend?

Gnome dependencies aren't probably very welcome to X/Lubuntu users...

What dependencies are you talking about? GNOME doesn't mean anything in terms of dependencies, it's just a scary strawman. gnome-scan depends on very common things: GLib/GIO, GTK, Cairo, fontconfig, gegl, GIMP libs (and GConf, but it's going to die in favor of GLib's GSettings anyway).

So it's really not pulling the whole GNOME desktop. Don't be fooled by the names - and please avoid this kind of reflex reaction against other projects.

Is this still an issue? gnome-scan seems completely stale/dead/deserted to me, while sane is still alive and well.
This should be reviewed when gnome-scan is ready, and that could take a while or might happen never at all...

Can I close this?
