Bug Description

When testing deployment of simple-scan in a VM <https://github.com/l0b0/root/blob/2449cbba41016fc0e0cf09ffe4bf7cd4d0434c12/modules/scanner/manifests/init.pp>, it appears I need to have a running X server to even use `--help` or `--version`:

[vagrant@archlinux ~]$ simple-scan --version
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
