Comment 1 for bug 100693

How can a ghost end up pointing to a container or a ghost folder end up
pointing to content? If someone messes around with stuff on the other
end?

I can see some use cases here. I'm not sure how important they are at this point.
When we have reference management this could even happen automatically.
