Bug Description

Binary package hint: shotwell

If I import scanned pictures (from analog photo camera) using "File> Import From Folder..." the pictures appear at the very bottom of all the photos that are currently in Shotwell's database because they are naturally undated (no exif information about exposure date). However, I usually assign dates to such pictures manually ("Photo> Adjust Date and Time..."). After the procedure photos will appear in the correct position chronologically when browsing through all pictures currently in the database (when "Pictures" is selected in the left pane).

What is not working - the entries under "Events" section in the left pane is not being created. I do not know if this is the intended behavior of the application, but it makes user experience a bit less great as one intuitively would expect "Events" to encompass even those events that are created manually.

Steps to reproduce the bug:
1. Import pictures with no exif information about exposure date.
2. Manually set picture date and time using "Photo> Adjust Date and Time...".
3. Correct dates are not created under "Events" list in the left pane.

This is known behavior -- Shotwell only auto-generates Events at import time. If you manually adjust the date/time of a photo later, Shotwell does not move the photo to an event for that date (or create a new one).

Events are kind of a middle ground between a pure chronological hierarchy of your photos and a user-editable set of photo albums. We do want to have a pure chronological view some day: http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/2747 With this feature, your photos would move to a new day if you updated their date/time.

To get the behavior you want, adjust the date/time of the photos, select the photos that comprise a single Event, and choose Events -> New Event. The new event will be sorted by the date of the earliest photo in the group.

Note that you can also drag photos to an existing event to add them to it.

Note, also, that we are actually considering moving photos to new events when their dates are modified. See

Thank you for your answer. I was actually not aware that it was possible to create events manually.
