Bug Description

https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/mediawiki.html

This page lists installation instructions for Ubuntu 16.04

Quote:

To install MediaWiki, run the following command in the command prompt:

   sudo apt install mediawiki php-gd

End Quote.

Unfortunately, the mediawiki package is no longer in the Ubuntu repository for 16.04

Following those instructions results in:

   Reading package lists... Done
   Building dependency tree
   Reading state information... Done
Package mediawiki is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'mediawiki' has no installation candidate

O.K. thanks.

Seems a bit odd to me, because it is there for 12.04, 14.04, 16.10, and zesty.

Agreed, I can't see any reason why it's not available for 16.04. Kinda annoying to do a manual installation just for the LTS os.

It is unclear to me how to proceed, as we really really hate adding temporary notes to the Ubuntu Serverguide.

I could be added to xenial as a backport. Much better solution than changing the docs.

Gunnar: Yes, I asked exactly that on bug #1527657 . Although a new bug report might be needed, as that one is actually in the "Fix Released" state.

Yes, I think that a new bug with "please backport..." would be the cleanest way to make such a request.

After further digging, it seems that backport to 16.04 has an upstream prerequisite that needs to be fixed first. see bug #1457960 , which already has a Xenial line, but only at the "Wishlist" level, which I think should be set to high.

You can run the 'requestbackport' command from ubuntu-dev-tools. It would be good if someone could test the trusty>xenial upgrade along with the request.

I see that Jeremy isn't subscribed to this bug report. There is absolutely no way I will get involved in any backport request beyond that I already did on those other two bug reports. I already have enough to do.

A backport request has already been filed (by the Debian maintainer) as bug #1637331. To get it done, pinging a member of the Ubuntu Backporters team is advisable.

I see that I deleted the mediawiki chapter as of bug #1598717.
See also serverguide revision number 300.
We'll bring back the chapter after it has been backported to 16.04
