The following is awkward and I suggest it be changed:
FROM:
The default configuration file has a significant amount of comments in order to document various configuration directives.
TO:
The default configuration file has a significant number of comments in order to provide documentation for a variety of configurations.

In my opinion "in order to document various configuration directives" is correct.
However, agree that "amount" should be "number".
