It is required to additionally install cgmanager: apt-get install cgmanager Following the steps in https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/lxc.html#lxc-basic-usage might not work for the unprivileged container creation on a fresh Ubuntu 16.04.01 installation. Depending on your initial installed packages, it might be required to open a new shell, otherwise the "lxc-start -n u1 -d" step might fail. Some text as per Serge's comment #6 below should be added to clarify this possible requirement.
