In the section 'Modifying/Populating your Database' the suggested text for the add_content.ldif file is incorrect for the addition of users.

The suggested line is:

    dn: uid=john,ou=People,dc=example,dc=com

This should read:

    dn: cn=john,ou=People,dc=example,dc=com

Well I never.

I tried it 4 times earlier to add different users and it failed until I changed that one bit. Just tried it again now and it works as it should.

Sorry, ignore this entirely, it must be my typing :-(
