It took several hours of man pages, trial and error, and google foo to get from the LDAP section of the 14.04 server guide, and this ticket: https:/
To save time for others using the server guide from 14.04 on a 14.10 system, please make a note here:

In case the document changes before this ticket is addressed, the relevant command which fails on 14.10 by default is:
sudo ldapsearch -Q -LLL -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -b cn=config dn
Sorry if this is a duplicate, I spent 4 hours trying to find the solution, and I ran out of energy to keep searching for related things.
