After slapd is installed you need to run sudo dpkg-reconfigure slapd to setup the server for use otherwise adding content will always fail

I never had to run dpkg-reconfigure. Provide more details, including what release of Ubuntu and slapd you are using.

I don't know whether this is my problem or not, but I've tried setting up a new 15.04 install several times now and failed to get a working installation each time.

I've followed the steps at https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/openldap-server.html (via cut & paste, substituting my domain for example.com). Each time I get to "sudo ldapadduser george example" and it responds "Error adding user george to LDAP". That's the only error message I get.

I've also tried "sudo ldapadduser george example". No difference.

I've also tried going through all the little files and changing the username "manager" to "admin". (Do I need to have an actual user named "admin" on the machine?) (And why did the ldap install script automagically choose "admin" instead of letting me provide a less obvious name?) No luck.

Each time I give up, I wipe the machine and reinstall 15.04. Just so any mistakes I made don't carry over.

I'm about ready to give up and leave my little cluster as so many standalone machines rather than having a shared password server. This just isn't working.

You need to verify things along the way to ensure each section has been confirmed. For instance, to verify the base install there is this line:

"We can check that the information has been correctly added with the ldapsearch utility"

Did you do that and did it give positive results? Do not proceed if it does not.

The trouble you cite is from the 'User and Group Management' which appears much much later in the tutorial and covers stuff that is extraneous to the actual LDAP server. This should be clear from the first paragraph of this section:

"The ldap-utils package comes with enough utilities to manage the directory but the long string of options needed can make them a burden to use. The ldapscripts package contains wrapper scripts to these utilities that some people find easier to use."

The ldapadduser utility is part of the ldapscripts package.
