Can you check you have the "ttf-ubuntu-font-family" package installed:

$ apt-cache policy ttf-ubuntu-font-family
ttf-ubuntu-font-family:
  Installed: 0.80-0ubuntu6
  Candidate: 0.80-0ubuntu6
  Version table:
 *** 0.80-0ubuntu6 0

Also, have you changed your /etc/schooltool/standard/schooltool.conf file somehow. There's a reportlab_fontdir line which should look like:

reportlab_fontdir /usr/share/fonts/truetype/liberation:/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family

I was able to reproduce your traceback by uninstalling the font package and by commenting the reportlab_fontdir line.
