The "latest binaries" grid at http://www.sbcl.org/platform-table.html cites release 1.0.23 for FreeBSD. I tried that and reliably got coredumps before the prompt.

The FreeBSD packages collection includes the binaries for SBCL 1.0.55 and you would install from it thus:

  su
  pkg_add -r sbcl

The FreeBSD ports collection (which is the way to install from source if you don't want your sysadmins to growl at you) includes SBCL 1.1.4. There are numerous ways to keep source in one's ports collection up-to-date (see for example http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/handbook/ports-using.html) and maybe we don't need to tell people what they are? But then:

  cd /usr/ports/lang/sbcl/
  make BATCH=yes
  su
  make install BATCH=yes

In summary: the grid is wrong; the installation instructions for both source and binary are wrong.

uname -a -> FreeBSD raven.ravenbrook.com 8.3-RELEASE-p3 FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE-p3 #0: Mon Jun 11 23:52:38 UTC 2012 <email address hidden>:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386

I guess the "AMD64" install is similarly affected.
