Bug Description

After experimenting with sbackup on Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS I tired to unistall it, but I can't as apt-get (and synaptic) say it is not installed. But I can list it, and start it, as the attached screenshot shows.

How can I uninstall something, which apt-get pretends is not installed? (It had been installed via synaptic)

ullix@athlon:~$ whereis sbackup
sbackup: /etc/sbackup.conf~ /usr/local/bin/sbackup

ullix@athlon:~$ sudo apt-get purge sbackup

ullix@athlon:~$ ls -al /usr/local/bin/sbackup*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 Jun 11 12:07 /usr/local/bin/sbackup -> ../share/sbackup/sbackup-run
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Jun 11 12:07 /usr/local/bin/sbackup-config-gtk -> ../share/sbackup/sbackup-config-gtk
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39 Jun 11 12:07 /usr/local/bin/sbackup-legacy-restore -> ../share/sbackup/sbackup-legacy-restore
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 Jun 11 12:07 /usr/local/bin/sbackup-restore-gtk -> ../share/sbackup/sbackup-restore-gtk

ullix@athlon:~$ sbackup
sbackup sbackupconfig sbackup-config-gtk sbackup-legacy-restore sbackup-restore-gtk

after that, I started sbackup from the command line, see screenshot

You must have a local (i.e. not through the deb system), because on my 12.04.3 I get:
$ l /usr/bin/sbackup*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 Sep 18 18:58 /usr/bin/sbackup -> ../share/sbackup/sbackup-run*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Sep 18 18:58 /usr/bin/sbackup-config-gtk -> ../share/sbackup/sbackup-config-gtk*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39 Sep 18 18:58 /usr/bin/sbackup-legacy-restore -> ../share/sbackup/sbackup-legacy-restore*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 Sep 18 18:58 /usr/bin/sbackup-restore-gtk -> ../share/sbackup/sbackup-restore-gtk*
Note, /usr/bin and not /usr/local/bin.
Removing the links from (you) /usr/local/bin (and optionally the files from /usr/local/share), and then installing from repo (sudo apt-get install sbackup) should help you.

Anton,
thanks, as you suggested, I removed the links, deleted the files, and reinstalled from repo.
Then I tried to start sbackup from the menu, but nothing came up. So I de-installed via synaptic

There still were various files wirh '*sbackup*' in them all over the place, which I deleted manually.

Still, even if I had a local install, why does it not show up in synaptic/apt-get as all other local installs do?

Anyway, I am using 'Back in time' now.
