I will try to look elsewhere for guidance on how to use this programme. I want to backup entire partitions (bootable) into compressed files.

Could you please elaborate how/from where you installed sbackup? From default repo, from PPA, from source...?

P.S.: sbackup works on a per-file-level. It is not possible to store a partition incl. allocation table into a compressed file by using sbackup. What you can do is to store all files contained in a partition into a backup (using sbackup). To restore it, you would need to re-create a partition of according type and then to restore the files from the backup snapshot to this partition.
