Bug Description

Binary package hint: libsane

HP DeskJet F4140 is a new All-in-One (print, scan, copy) that is not in sane's database yet. Sane works fine for root, but users in group 'scanner' cannot access the All-in-One scanner functionality. To fix this, the following line needs to be added to /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules:

SYSFS{idVendor}=="03f0", SYSFS{idProduct}=="7e04", MODE="664", GROUP="scanner"

Is this bug also present upstream for the sane project itself?

Yes, upstream sane project does not have product ID for HP DeskJet F4140.

$ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:<email address hidden>:/cvsroot/sane co sane-backends
$ cd sane-backends
$ rouslan@rs:sane-backends$ grep -i 7e04 doc/descriptions/hp*

Above shows nothing for product ID 7e04. Below shows lots of entries for vendor ID 03f0.

Can you please also file the bug upstream? That would be the proper place to fix this. You can add the link to the upstream bug to this report later.

Rouslan, thank you for taking this to debian. Sorry for being unclear. What I meant is that the most appropriate place for reporting and fixing this would be the sane project itself (http://www.sane-project.org)

sorry for the noise. Please disregard my stupid comment 6. I figured this was the Debian distro bug tracker. But indeed the sane project uses the gforge service hosted by alioth.debian.org

I was confused by the debian.org part in alioth.debian.org. Is there a way to remove obsolete upstream things?

Sense, I think you can change an association, but not delete it.

According to the report on alioth, this looks like a problem in hplip. Adding ubuntu hplip package.

Can someone with this printer please help diagnose this issue. From the upstream report:

"The hp.desc file is only for scanners supported by the 'hp' sane
backend. I would bet that this scanner is supported by some other
backend (hplip?). I would like to see the output of scanimage
-L to get the right driver, then i will add the entry."

Thanks

I'm closing this issue as invalid for sane-backends because -- as upstream indicated -- this is not a Sane issue. Furthermore, HP's own website says you should use HPLIP for this particular scanner, so I assume it must be working by now, two-and-a-half year after this issue was reported. I'm setting the hplip task to Fix Releaed.
