BibTeX is activated merely by \bibliographystyle

Bug Description

I am using a documentclass where I'm not allowed to use bibtex; I have to copy/paste the .bbl to inside the thebibliography environment myself. I've built some scripts to do this patching. However, when I call rubber it will see the \bibliographystyle command in my .tex file, and activate the BibTex module. I believe that \bibliographystyle is unrelated to BibTeX.

What is the point of using \bibliographystyle if you don't use BibTeX? It sets the style for BibTeX to use. if you write your bibitems by hand (or some other process), you can just leave it out, it doesn't do anything, right?

My apologies; I thought that \bibliographystyle was a LaTeX not a BibTeX command. (To date, I have failed to find the manual that describes the command.) It seems that it's only for BibTeX, so this bug report isn't very important.

I do use BibTeX, but the conference I was planning on submitting uses sigplanconf.cls which does not allow a \bibliography command, so I had to write a sed script to patch the .bbl into the .tex in my Makefile.

I now realise I can fix the problem on my part by removing the \bibliographystyle in the sed script. Thanks for the reply!
