Currently one cannot create rpm for vanilla kernel in Mandriva by invoking 'make rpm' inside kernel sources.
(Can confirm at least for linux-3.2)

FYI (and historical context)
When the 2.6.0 kernel series was first announced years ago,
an RPM "bug" (sic) was prominently mentioned. The core
issue is that the kernel build process was invoking /bin/rpm,
not /usr/bin/rpmbuild.
The point is this:
Blaming rpm5 for incompatibilities implemented in kernel Makefiles
makes no sense whatsoever: fix your build, or make a specific RFE for
"compatibility" in the @rpm5.org rpmbuild for some useful (to kernel
developers) change.
A bug report that is basically just
This used to work!
cannot be solved without access to a time machine to adjust the past.
