OTOH it's just what config.sub from autoconf returns. Maybe we shouldn't touch it.

The reason why configure figures "unknown" instead of "suse" is because /etc/SuSE-release is absent in the build root. Because that has already been discussed more OR LESS in bug #436744. With all those "branding-openSUSE" packages in the distribution, this really looks non-consistent not to allow branding on the lower level.
