Bug Description

1. Go to any article, such as <>.
2. Scan the page.

What you see: A row of social sharing icons (Facebook, Twitter, etc) seems to be the second or third most important thing on the page.

What you should see: The sharing icons are either not there at all, or are much less prominent.

Evidence from a variety of sources shows that sharing icons are used on about 0.2% of page views:

As more browsing is done on mobile devices, less sharing is done with buttons, because people prefer to share within an app where they’re already signed in, rather than a Web site where they have to enter their password. <>

Removing the buttons altogether would have a bonus of resolving bug 1617391 and fixing bug 1688394 and bug 1722264.

Alternatively, the buttons could be moved to the end of the article, where people are more likely to be when they decide that the article is worth sharing.
