Preferences menu won't appear

Bug Description
Since the login dialog that were suppose to appear after install didn't show up, I selected the "Preferences" option after adding the application to my panel, but this only opens gedit with an empty preferences file. Can someone give me an example of a typical preferences file or fix this bug?
