changing temperature flicks between default and new value

when changing colour temperature using -o or -t X:Y the screen will go to the new daytime temp, then fade toward the new night time temp, then flick back and forth between the night temp and the default temp until I terminate terminal (and end process).

I am just using ubuntu 12.04 stable on an amd chipset and the 960GM/u3s3 fx motherboard.
