I would be grateful for any assistance with this issue as I have been after this application for some time.

Many thanks,

I stopped updating this due to lack of time kepping updates for every Ubuntu release evety 6 month. It's on my to do list...

I would recommend using a simple script to download the earth images and let the ubuntu update it automatically. The images can be found on:

http://www.die.net/earth/

Take your pick and change the url below on the script.

I'm gonna write the steps, so that any body can follow them.

First create a folder in your home directory:

$ mkdir ~/.rsw

and cd to it:

$ cd ./.rsw

Opend a text editor and paste the script from below, save it as "changer.sh", exit and make it executable:

$chmod +x ~/.rsw/changer.sh

Now all you need to do is run the at least script and once the first image is downloaded you can set the ubuntu wallpaper as that image "~/.rsw/world_sunlight_Wallpaper.jpg". This will be in the folder we just created. As the image get downloaded/updated ubuntu will automatically update the wallpaper.

The last thing to do is set the script on your startup applications and you are done. Hope this helps

script:

#!/bin/bash

cd ~/.rsw/
while [ 1 ]; do
 COUNTER=0
 while [ $COUNTER -lt 60 ]; do
  wget http://static.die.net/earth/mercator/1024.jpg -O world.jpg
  temp=$(stat -c%s world.jpg)
  if [[ $temp > 1000 ]]
   then rm world_sunlight_Wallpaper.jpg
    mv world.jpg world_sunlight_Wallpaper.jpg
    break
  fi
  sleep 5
         let COUNTER=COUNTER+1
 done
 sleep 3600
done

Hi!
I had previously used this nice and light program, and have tried to install it after having reinstalled Ubuntu, but got a message similar to Dave's.

Following Carles' instructions, when I first run the script as follows
$ ./changer.sh
I get the following message, which then repeats itself each 5 seconds ("sleep 5"):

--2014-11-30 18:52:47-- http://static.die.net/earth/mercator/1600.jpg
Resolviendo static.die.net (static.die.net)... 209.151.236.22, 2607:f820:42::16

Petición HTTP enviada, esperando respuesta... 404 Not Found
2014-11-30 18:52:48 ERROR 404: Not Found.

(The language should be familiar to Carles ;) )
I have tried using different image urls, as you can see in the text, but the result is the same.

Could you please help?

I will also look up how to include the script in the startup applications, there are several threads on that issue.

Many thanks
Íñigo

Sorry Íñigo,

die.net stopped the use of wget to retrieve the images from the command line.

You would have to look into the curl options instead to 'pretend' that your downloading from a browser.

I'm gonna be working on a rewrite of this application, hopefully with Carles Sentis help!

Thanks for your interest in this application guys!
