no ttyUSBx reception thru CH340 serial adapter

I have been using said adapter on rPi2 and rPi3
for years w/o any issues.
OS being raspbian jessie from some time 2016.
Ever since a major update/upgrade last week
I can send to rs232 but not receive anything.
Changing the SDcard back to the 2016 version
(no other changes) everything works fine again.
My recently freshly set up raspbian stretch
shows precisely the same symptoms.
Has the driver been fixed already?
What can I do to eventually replace just the
new driver with the old one?
I really need a solution - for both, Jessie and Stretch..
