logname fails upon fresh Raspbian install

Upon initial install of Raspbian, the logname cli util does not work but instead provides the error message "logname: no login name". This is despite being logged in as the user "pi". Note that the problem persisted across a re-install. At least one other user reported the same issue in the linked original issue above.

My instance of this problem is with Raspian running on a Raspberry Pi 3, Model B from CanaKit. The other user stated they had this issue after downloading directly from https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/ .
