Bug Description

Hello,

I tried to install "upstart" with the traditional "sudo apt-get install upstart". But, since it is a dangerous action as it removes the "sysvinit" package, it asks me to type the french (My Raspbian installation is set up in French) "Yes, do as I say!", which is "Oui, faites ce que je vous dis !".

And when I type what is written, it tells me "Abort".

This issue seems corrected in Debian since 2003 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=217152).
My Raspbian is up-to-date.

Thanks.

Have you tested this on a debian wheezy system?

Not yet. I am going to try it tomorrow.

I tried and it doesn't work either in Debian Wheezy. After reading http://lists.debian.org/deity/2012/10/msg00042.html, it seems that the space before "!" in the .po is not a simple space but a non-breaking space. That's why it doesn't work when we simply type the space button on the keyboard.
Howerver, it works when we copy-paste.

Strange, that bug is marked as fixed in the version of apt we use. Maybe someone broke it again.

If you can reproduce it on a fully updates wheezy system please file a new bug in debian.

I might know about a reason for this bug:

You, Marvin Roger, must have typed a regular space in between "dis" and "!", where "apt" expected a non-breaking space.

Also, this bug was reportedly fixed. You should update your system's version of "apt" to the latest.

Have you tried reporting it to this Mailing List: https://lists.debian.org/debian-l10n-french/ ?

As far as I know, they do (take care of) the translation and it is therefor most likely that they will be able to help you.

I did not, I am using Debian on desktop and I don't have this issue, I only have in Raspbian. This is probably an edge case, I can't believe I am the only French using Raspbian.

True, but you may be the only French user of Raspbian who has triggered this action and choose to continue (ie not bail out) with it ;-)

I have just compared the relevant file (/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/apt.mo) from amd64 (apt_0.9.7.9+deb7u7_amd64.deb from Debian) with the one from Raspbian (apt_0.9.7.9+rpi1+deb7u7_armhf.deb) and they are binary equal.

And that leads me to the conclusion that the error is NOT in the package.
Maybe your keyboard (setup) is different?

Erratum: I said "I am using Debian on desktop and I don't have this issue, I only have in Raspbian." On 2013-06-24 I said the issue was also present in Debian Wheezy. So forget my last message, I forgot what I said two years ago :)

This issue is two years old, things are probably sorted out now! I will try to get access to a RPi and I will repeat the exact same steps with the same setup (same keyboard), I'll keep you informed.
